Now the external disk does not accept large transfers

I was having some trouble and found that I had misplaced the 2
connectors for the IDE and the CD/DVD. Therefore the bios was showing
the CD/DVD as the primary Master/Slave and the IDE's were Secondary.
When changing connections round the Bios looked a little better and
the fault dissapeared.

Now I have trouble with the 200GB Western Digital Caviar. It is
normally in a small external case called disk. When removed and taking
the place of the 2'nd disk on the mainboard it test fiine even with
the WD test program. It has 3 partitions as it used to be the first
drive in the computer. Therefore partitions are 7.81,80.84.97.65
approximately. The first partition held the OS but has now been
formatted and is empty.
I am trying to place the backup files in Drive M or N but get errors
like this, taken from the event log.

Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable
to save all the data for the file

\Device\HarddiskVolume13\backups\D050306.bkf. The data has been lost.
This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or
network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please
run the chkdsk utility on the volume M:.

THAT WAS SEEN TO WHEN PLACED IN THE COMPUTER. WD REPORTED NO ERRORS

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR15.

HOW DO I CURE THAT?

Received a device interface REMOVAL notification for device:
\\?\USBSTOR#Disk&Ven_WDC_WD20&Prod_00JB-00FUA0&Rev_0811#7&b94fa33&0#
{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR23.

DIFFERENT DR NUMBER

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR19.

Sorry about the capitals. If the drive C is 1, then M = 11 and N = 12,
just how do we get different numbers like 19 an 23

There is more than enough space available on destinations and it did
use to work, even on usb but speeded up when I got a USB2 hub. At the
moment the DISK is connected directly to one of the sockets on the
back of the computer.

One of two things:
USB 2.0 is not properly installed.
A failure with the USB/IDE bridge controller in the external enclosure.
