.. . . no matter *what* program is running.

Originally, this began happening only when running MS Office
applications. (Word, Excel, MSN Messenger, etc).

NOW it's occasional and doesn't matter what program is running, except
today, when attempting to run a virus scan after downloading the current
updates (Norton AV 2005), it froze in the middle of the scan. (Nothing
is responsive, not the mouse, not CTRL+ALT+DEL, nothing at all).

After each reboot, the scan got farther into the HDD, but it *did* have
*one* detection - which I have not yet repaired because of the freeze.

I am going to make some more attempts from a cold boot instead of a
restart and see what happens, and of course, check back here
periodically to see what is recommended.

I have Ad Aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy installed, as well as the
current updated Zone Labs.

Thanks in advance,

Feather

Updated drivers?

Cleaned (uninstalled unused applications, ran disk cleanup, defragmented,
ran more than just AdAware and Spybot S&D) your system lately?

Went to Symantec and downloaded and ran the "Intelligent Updater"?

Yes to all of the above.

Am using Live Update. Is Intelligent Updater better? *silly grin*

I managed to get the scan to go through folders, found a spyware that
wasn't caught on initial scan and killed it.

However, earlier, I was online and downloading e mail (Mozilla), and it
froze again.

Rebooted and here I am. . .

in the meantime I will search for new drivers for some of the hardware,
see if that's the issue, and perhaps check to see if I might need a
better cooling system (since it's an Athlon).

Thanks again,

Feather

It is updated almost daily, where LiveUpdate only gets their normal and
emergency updates. If the problem came about after the last update, the fix
for it might not be out through LiveUpdate until the next week, where you
could get it early with the intelligent updater.

Many thanks. I will definitely use Intelligent Updater.

More updates later, as I have to go to work.

Thanks again,
