Is there a way to display a notification icon in the tray like Outlook
Express does? A sound is not sufficient, I usually have it muted. Also,
what about the hearing impaired?
 
There should be an icon in the system tray when new mail is received.
Check your tray icon settings, perhaps you have that one suppressed.

You can change the notification sound to a more attention getting one.
