Notification for New Messages

I cannot get Outlook to notify me (with a message or a tiny envelope) when I
get new messages. The Microsoft directions say that I need to click the
"Display a New Mail Desktop Alert" checkbox under Desktop Alert Settings. I
dont have that box. I am only able to change the duration and the
transparency there. Anybody have any suggestions?

The screen on which the Desktop Alert Settings button is shown; the checkbox
is right above that button (Tools | Options | E-Mail Options | Advanced
E-mail Options).

If you create a rule for all incoming messages to show a desktop alert, then
the desktop alert flag will show, no matter which folder your message arrives
in. Just remember to have the rule run prior to any other rules you have set
up.

Notification still does not appear right away...
I went into tools/options/email options/checked display a notification
message when new mail arrives. I also right clicked my
toolbar/Properties/Customize/choose "always show" for you have new unopened
items and choose "always show" for you have new unopened items. I also have
checked "lock the task bar". Still I do not receive an immediate pop up
alert telling me when new mail arrives. In order for me to see if I have
mail I have to do something in outlook, like go into a folder and then go
back into my inbox. Is there something I'm missing? We are having this
problem with several computers in our office. We have XP. Thanks for ANY
help!

Do you have a firewall between the client machines and the server? That
generally indicates a problem with RPC communication which frequently
means they're being blocked.

I did turn off the firewall and notification happened right away.
If I turn off the firewall will that open me up to get spam/viruses?

UDP packet blocking. Add Outlook to your firewall exceptions.

It could. However, if you're in a corporate environment, chances are
there's already a firewall in place and the one on your desktop machine
doesn't add to your safety.

I had tried this already but it didn't work. Turning off the Firewall
restores functionality though so what could I be doing wrong? Can anybody
point me to exact instructions? I put in an exception in the Windows firewall
for Outlook, is there something different I need to do?

I forgot I had done the registry change as well and that didn't help either.
I messed around some more and added a UDP exception on Port 527 I think and
then it worked. I played around some more and sometimes it worked and
sometimes it didn't. I'll just have to see. On the other computers I just
added the Outlook exception and it works fine do far so who knows what crazy
Windows problem was stopping it for me the first time. I'll just have to
cross my fingers.
