Notification Area (Taskbar) icons are not hiding

Hello guys,
I am running Windows XP Professional on a PC with two (2)
hard drives in a Raid 1 (Mirroring) configuration.

After the Windows installation the icons in the
Notification Area (on the right side of the taskbar) are
not hiding. There is NO an arrow present, that you can
click on, in order to expand the notification area and
show the hidden icons. Currently all my icons (5 or 6)
are always visible.

Please note, that I did select the option "Hide inactive
icons" in Properties\Taskbar, and then in Customize I
selected "Always hide when inactive" for all available
icons. By the way, the installation of my Windows XP
Professional went through smoothly and without apparent
problems.

How can I fix this problem and regain the functionality of
this feature (without reinstalling Windows XP
Professional)?

Any and all help appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

One step I didn't see in your post... To make the selections take effect in
"Customize... , first click on a blank spot either on main Taskbar or in
Notification Area. In the pop-up menu, click on "Lock the Taskbar" if it is
checkmarked. Then do your changes via "Customize..." Repeat the
right-click to lock Taskbar when finished.

Forget about it!
After I installed one more program, I gained the
functionality of the "Hide Inactive Icons" feature. Now I
have a little arrow to click on to expand the Notification
Area and display the hidden icons.
Lesson learned!
