Notepad unresponsive when trying to save...

My notepad app freezes up when I try to save or save-as. Clicking the red X
allows me to kill the app with "end program" then gives me the choice to tell
Microsoft.

I am using XP SP2.

This recently started happening and made me realize just how much I use
notepad - now that I can't...

I tried to replace notepad.exe with a copy that works on another computer.
No luck. ( Yes, both windows root and /system32 )

I also tried a system restore with no luck.

Can't find this anywhere on the 'net so hopefully someone can help.

Thanks!

You probably have a corrupt, (or incorrect) version of commdlg.dll somewhere
in the path of notebook. Search the drive for all instances, removing
everything NOT in ../system32 or system32/dllcache.

If the original is corupt, go to start/run, and type:

SFC /SCANNOW

to repair all system files.

Are you able to save in other applications?

If you wait rather than ending the program does the Save dialog box come up
ever, even if it's after a very long wait?

Thank you for the fast response. Unfortunately that didn't work... I
searched the drive and found the file in 3 places:

c:\I386
c:\windows\system
c:\windows\system32

I removed all but the one in \system32

I then ran "SFC /SCANNOW" and it went through it's check and when the
progress bar reached the end it just went away. Nothing else - no report or
anything.

I re-started the machine and tried Notepad. Same thing...

Thanks for trying though!

Well... That was a strange fix!

I sat and waited, and after a couple of minutes the save dialogue box DID
appear. My file saved just fine. I tried saving a few other test files
after that, and Notepad is working perfectly now.

THANK YOU!

You're welcome. :-)

I'd guess that you have a mapped drive to an unavailable network share. The
dialog box was having to wait for it to timeout before it is displayed.
