Notepad Saving Files in

G

Guest

I have Win XP Home SP2 .When I try either ‘Save’ or ‘Save as’ in Notepad I
am presented with a Dialog Box in which the ‘save as type’ is set by default
to
Text Documents (*.txt).
Clicking on ‘Save’ in this box has no effect – the file is not saved -
however if I change the ‘save as type’ to the other alternative offered
which is ‘all files’ the file saves as a .txt file to the required location.
Is this normal? Shouldn't the 'Save as' function work?

What is the extension of the file you are trying to save. Notepad of course
is for text only..

Notepad only saves as a.txt file whether you use the save option or the save
as option. If you want something different try using WordPad. Alternatively
you could buy a copy of Microsoft Word. Another alternative is OpenOffice
(http://www.openoffice.org) this is actually a damn good package and more
importantly it is 'free' to download and use.

No, how could Notepad save a file as 'all files'? 'all files' means exactly
that, all file types. That option can be used to VIEW all the files in the
directory you choose, to see what is already there before you save. Now if
you want to do somethine useful, such as save a Notepad file as an .ini
file, or a .bat file, then just type in the file extension you want to use.
Of course, you can only create a text file with Notepad.

No. You can add your own extension to Notepad and it'll save it correctly.
e.g. using the name MyBatch.bat will indeed save it as a batch file, and it
will not have the .txt extension appended. Try it. Same with any other
extension.

If you change Save as type to All files (*.*) then you can save with any
extension you want.
