Notebook Hard Drives

I am at a lost to know why my notebook doesn't diagnose the HDD.

I purchased a Dell Latitude D610 a few weeks ago and purchased a Fujitsu
60GB HDD, I ran the hdd diagnostic utility from the Fujitsu website and got
an error after the short test saying it cannot write log file to hdd and
wouldn't continue to the extended test, so I contacted Fujitsu support and
they had no idea, I sent the drive back to the supplier and got a 80GB and
that did the same, so I decided to purchase a Samsung drive and ran the
diagnostic tool from Samsung's website and that told me IRQ error time-out,
when I tried selecting certain tests.
But the funny thing is that all these notebook drives ran their diagnostic
tests ok in my desktop computer. I booted from a floppy drive with a win98
bootdisk, so I'm doing everything ok, the Dell diagnostic cd seems to test
ok and was wondering if Dell has done something to prevent me running these
tools. I phoned Dell and they told me that they do not support hdd's that
didn't ship with the system.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If the HD works properly under the OS and the Dell Diagnostics indicates no errors -- What
are you worried about ?

That wasn't my question, there is obversely a problem which I would like to
know about.

No, there is not an obvious problem. The problem is only in the interpretation of the
results.

hmm, so it works in the desktop and not the notebook, so I guess there is
not an obvious problem after all!!

Wondering why it is necessary for you to run a diagnostic utility on a new
HDD, to the point that you would return two new drives that had no problems
simply because they did not run the diagnostic utility?

Hmmm - no mention of the HD NOT working in the notebook, only diagnostic tests not
completing except for Dell Diags.

Unless you use a 2.5" to IDE conversion kit you can't put a notebook HD on a desktop.

I guess the idea of a BIOS update on the NB didn't cross your mind either nor the fact that
Dell likes to use WD and IBM/Hitachi HDs in their notebooks.

I gave up on Fujitsu hard drives at least two years ago because of
serious reliability problems.

Try a different brand if you cannot get the Fujitsu to work properly
for you.

Good luck

Because of an irq time out error?
Most HD diagnostics run best as an exclusive application, nothing else
running and/or using resources that the application and hardware may need.
I will not run HD diagnostics software in any windows environment due to
that. And, will not trust its results. Similar with bios flashing.
Msdos does this natively.
Do I know the answer, probably not. Its my best guess.

Seems if the "diagnostic" is running from DOS, it would have a problem
writing the log to a NTFS formatted drive.

Shame you bought a Fujitsu hard drive. They are not very good. As a laptop
owner, I can recommend a Seagate Momentus hard drive. They are designed for
laptops and are very fast. They use new technology to improve speed, and
battery consumption and are very quiet. Just thought you might like to know.
