Notebook extremely slow when connected to a network

One of our directors is experiencing performance problems on his laptop.

The machine is excruciatingly slow when it is connected to any network. Upon
inspection, I noticed that the machine is perfect when not connected. The
machine is only slow when connected. I checked that the hard disk is
defragmented, I also did a registry defrag just for good measure.

The machine is also running all the normal protocols for networking such as
IPv4, Printer and file sharing etc. No other services are running like IPX or
Linux services.

Any sugestions on how to fix this problem?

Is it slow *all the time* (on all networks, even after they logon, etc?) or
just some of the time (only when not on the corporate network, only before
logon completes, etc?)

Any persistent Mapped Network Drives on it?
Is it trying to logon to a domain?

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Hi Shenan,

Thank you for the prompt reply to my not so well structured question :).

The notebook is slow all the time, not just only when trying to log on to
the corporate network. It is this slow even when it is connected to a small
workgroup or even a peer to peer connection. It seems that it is this slow as
soon as a network cable is plugged in.

The persistant mapped drives were also removed a long while ago, before this
problem reared it's head.

Had the same problem. Ran spyware removal and registry repair tool
and it sorted it out.

Try adaware, spybot, spyware detector for spyware removal.

RegistryFix for registry repair.
