Not waiting for dialtone

All out of sudden, I cannot establisch an internet connection any more. The
dialup is setup to wait for a dialtone but it doesn't wait for it. You can
hear it that the dialing is done before you can hear a tone. If I try it
with a laptop (on that cable) it works fine, so the problem must be software
specific (not hardware) IMO.

Any hints?

WinXP SP2 (all updates applied)

Go to device manager and remove the modem and reboot. XP will reinstall the
modem and possibly fix.
