not sure if i can delete updates

i have xp sp2 on my laptop. i have downloaded sp1 and sp3 updates
automatically.
my questions are
1.. can or should i remove these updates
2..do i need them in my system
3... if i remove them will it harm my laptops operating system
4...also downloaded silverlight and need to know if i need it as well

thx in advance...i am new to this computer stuff..

Since you are new, you should probably keep all recommended updates.
Silverlight is not an update, and if you don't like using it, you should
remove it.
