NOT SOLVED

Sorry. I thought my problem of delayed population of the
Task Bar icons was solved when I removed a defective 2nd
hard drive. This was not the case.

Murray,

I don't remember verbatim your orginal post. However, the notification area
does take time to populate for many different reasons. Especially after
explorer.exe crashes or you change your always hide settings, the chevron
disappears, you log off, switch users.......
