(Not Responding)

T

Tom Brown

I have tried REALLY HARD to like Vista and MS Mail. But, it's driving me
crazy with the thing (Mail) freezing and giving me the "(Not Responding)"
all the time. It happens on about 50% of the times I click on anything in
MS Mail. Any clues as to where to look for a problem? I'm ready to go back
to OE6.

TIA,

Tom

I'd blow the message stores off and restart Windows Mail. I don't think the
WMUtil will help on that one.

Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database. Each email is stored

separately.

Do the following:

1) Open Control Panel then select Folder Options.

a) click on the Views tab

b) Select "Show hidden files and folders"

c) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

d) click APPLY then OK.

e) Close Control Panel

2) From Windows Mail

a) Click on the Tools menu

b) click on Options

c) click on the Advanced tab

d) click the Maintenance button

e) click the Store Folders button.

f) make a note of the location of the message stores. It will be

something like:

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

g) close Windows Mail

3) Open Windows Explorer

When it opens, you will see a small black triangle next to the user account

name. Click it to collapse it.

For the following, the triangle will not appear till you put the mouse over

the element in question.

Move the mouse to the "Computer" line. A triangle will appear, click on it

to expand it.

You should see something like "Local Disk (C:)"

Click on the triangle to expand it.

Locate "Users" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate <username> and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "AppData" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Local" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Microsoft" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Now, in the right window pane, locate Windows Mail.

Click on it.

In the left window pane, scroll upward till you see "Local Disk (C:)"

Now, in the right window pane, hold them left mouse button down on the

Windows Mail folder.

Drag it to the "Local Disk (C:)" and release the mouse button.

Select MOVE Here.......

Now, this may take a bit to get done, depending upon how much mail is there.

Give it time.

Now, when it's done, create a new folder name Windows Mail to replace the

moved one in the

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder.

Now start Windows Mail.

It will be empty but that's no biggie.

Create a couple of folders in Windows Mail and name them Old Mail, Old

Sent.

Click on the Old Mail folder to open it.

Resize Windows Mail so you can see both Windows Explorer and Windows Mail.

In the Windows Mail folder you will see a Local Folders folder, click the

triangle to expand it.

Locate the Inbox folder.

In this folder you will see a lot of .eml files. These are the old emails.

Drag and drop ONLY the .eml files to the Old Mail folder in Windows Mail.

Do similar for Sent Items to the Old Sent folder.

Now, see if Windows Mail works for you.

Personally I have no problems with WM, but there are plenty of free
alternatives out there without going back to XP which is what you would need
to do in order to use OE.

Try Thunderbird, it is free & a very good email/ news client.

It would be a good news client if it were kitted out
with the full set of tools to deal with newsgroup content.
It is hopeless with multipart binaries since it has no
combine and decode function.

40tude is good for that. Works well in Vista.

There are several adequate alternatives but I'm sticking with
WM since, AFAIK, it is the only full function newsreader that
marks crossposted messages read across the board when
read in one group and doesn't cost anything.

Can't comment on that as I never download binaries in newgroups

Well, I guess my big mouth led everyone off track. I lamented that I wanted
to go back to OE6 but what I really want is to get WM working better and
find out why I am getting all these (Not Responding) situations.

Since no one offered a hint of anything other than alternatives for me to
try, I should assume one of two things.

#1. You also get the (Not Responding) but they don't bother you
#2. You do not see the (Not Responding) situations.

Any help in finding out the source of the (Not Reponding) and very slow
operations will be appreciated.

I experience the problem only when selecting a newsgroup
that has several hundred thousand headers but eventually
WinMail does respond and allows me to process the group.
Usually the not responding lasts 30 seconds to a minute.
I rationalise it because of the sheer size of the newsgroup
and live with it because I can still use other applications.

Perhaps it is related to the slow copying of large files
problem that has been mentioned with respect to Vista.
I like to think so and comfort myself with the notion
that M$ are looking into it.

Details, details details.

Processor, RAM. hard drive space, video card and RAM.

Not in WIndows Mail do I see a (Not Responding) but other software.

Reading and writing to the drive while accessing the CD\DVD drive or printer
will pop up some Not Responders as well.

However, waiting a few moments all is back and well again.

During the beta it was not uncommon to see it not respond. I put in a Nvidia
video card with 256 meg of RAM and things were okay after that.

Is there any drive activitiy or high use of the processor and is winmail.exe
the culprit? Any AV or anti-spam? I don't recall what's in the original post
since all of that was removed on your reply.

You need to do a little digging into the details

Ok, here are the details of my system. It's a relatively new Sony VAIO
VGN-SZ430n laptop with an Intel Core 2 T7200 and 2 Gig ram. It has a 160
Gig hard disk and I use Kaspersky A/V. It has an NVIDA GeForce Go 7400
video card. I have Vista Business.

It is not when I am opening large newsgoups with many thousands of unread
files. It frequently happens when I attempt to go from previewing an email
and just want to click on another folder. I have never noticed any disk
activity but it's possible the disk is searching for something. I'll keep an
eye out for that but I just have not noticed it.

Someone mentioned it might be a problem with Winmail.exe. Is there some kind
of known problem?

Thanks,

Tom

i had the same problem only with other programs. Hit control alt & delete and
open up task manager.

check your cpu usage with nothing running.

Mine was 100%

go to processes and look to see if a program is using a lot of your cpu.

In my case it was mcaffee spam guard.

once i deleted the program, vista run awesome

Video drivers up to date?

Go to Performance Informantion and Tools in Control Panel. See what the base
score or Update my score and see what it runs.

Fire up Taskmanager ( Ctrl - Alt - Delete) and see what all processes are
running and if there are any spikes of high CPU useage.

Start with that.

Tom, post the individual sub-component scores here.
My laptop is similar to yours (same video card), and I'd be interested
to see if the slowness you're experiencing is reflected in the
performance scores.

Ok, the video driver is up to date. The overall Windows Experience Index
rating is 3.3.

Processor 4.9
RAM 4.5
Graphics 3.6
Gaming Graphics 3.3
Primary Hard Disk 4.7

By the way, my Virtual Memory is set at 2345 MB.

Let me know if you see anything that looks like a problem.

I just noticed another thread about Windows Mail severe performance
slowdowns and some are saying that deleting update KB9831768 helps. What do
you think?

Your scores look fine to me. Mine are 4.7, 4.3, 3.7, 3.2, 4.8.
That's for a slower CPU (T5200), and less RAM (1GB).
My HP laptop is really snappy, even with WinMail.
Whatever your issue is, it's not hardware-related, and it's not
affecting your Windows Experience Index scores.
