Not Recognizing Blank CD's

I have a DVD+ -RW drive, and it was working before, but now it does not
recognize a blank cd. Not in the windows wrteable cd program, or in Nero. It
says there is no cd inserted. It does recognize data cd's and the such though.

I read a thread about uninstalling the drive and then rebooting windows, and
that did not work. Windows recognizes my drive as a dvd + - RW.

I have checked the recording tab, and it is checked for recording.

Any help please.

I am still having this problem, I have done more searching and have not
discovered anything else wrong. The only possible thing I can think of is a
bad drive, but can a drive read but not write? Seems odd to me.

Anybody got any hints?

Thanks guys & gals.

I have been told that you can ruin a drive by inserting a media of too high
a speed unless you ensure that you have applied the most recent firmware
upgrade. I had the same problem with both an HP burner and a Toshiba burner.

I am not sure exactly what you saw. But it sounds like a similar prob. I had
w/HP. All of the sudden while doing a DVD burn I got some sort of error msg.
Disappeared before I read it. After that while device mgr saw the drive, the
drive would not see any disc. CD or DVD.
HP had me uninstall.reinstall the driver to no avail. Then for some odd
reason they had me actually disc. the cables on the drive. As I figured no
change. I had to send it to them. There report came back as ntf. But they
replaced the drive and upgradded firmware. So if they did that how was it
ntf. Anyway good luck...

Well I do not remember getting any errors the last time I burned a cd. I used
it not too long ago to clear some -rw discs. Is there someway to check the
firmware or to get an update of the firmware? This is annoying.

Thanks for the post guys.

Another update, the drive does n ot recognize anythign now. Yet it shows up
in Windows, and it was turned off in my bios. I turned it on and it showed up
there. However, it would not boot off the windows cd from that drive. I
believe it is now conclusive this drive is bad.

Thanks.
