I have a problem common to most except that I could recive emails and
suudenly I cant! I had Macafee when I purchased my computer from Dell
together with Vista. It is coincident that the problem occurred since i
renewed my subscription to Macafee. However I have taken advice in these
threads and disabled it and have tried "netsh interface tcp set global
autotuning=disabled" in cmd.exe but still to no avail. The error message is
"Account: 'pop.virgin.net', Server: 'pop.virgin.net', Protocol: POP3, Port:
110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19". I am not too astute at this
so any simple help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

It is not clear how you "disabled" McAfee, but often no relief is
obtained unless McAfee is completely uninstalled, then follow that up
with their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

Then delete the mail account that was corrupted by McAfee, restart
Windows Mail and recreate the account.

If successful, then download and install a replacement antivirus:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning module.

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of aggressive antivirus products:

Thanks for prompt reply. I did use the debris removal tool. I thought about
deleting and recreating account, but started process and decided I might not
be brave enough! I was unsure of what details to enter for "Incoming mail
(POP3 or IMAP) server" and "Outgoing email server (SMTP) name" can you offer
any advice please? also do I need to check the box that my outgoing server
requires authenticaton.

Thanks

Also, I meant to ask, will deleting the email account lose all messages
currently held within the inbox and those that are stuck in the ether
awaiting delivery as they cant download? or will everything be reinstated
when I recreate the account

Nick

Before you delete that account, go to Tools, Accounts, select that account,
Properties, Servers. Write down what you see there. Also go to the Advanced
tab and notice if the default ports are used (no SSL): port 110 for incoming,
and port 25 for outgoing. If so, no need to write that down because those
are default values.

For future reference, your mail provider probably has a web page with all
that information. If you need help finding it, let us know who your mail
provider is.

Not to worry, Windows Mail does not delete any folders or email when
deleting an account. (Windows Live Mail does, a stupid design flaw.)
Messages that are pending delivery will patiently wait for you.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you Havo. I have a similar problem, it
seems. I tried to start a new thread but this website wouldn't seem to let me
do it, so I am joining yours. (Would there be many more threads raising this
problem on this site if it was easier to start a new thread .......??)
I got Vista Premium a month ago, replacing XP. I use AVG anti-virus free. I
have had no problems until now, and have not made any changes until now
except that I downloaded Service Pack 1 a few days ago. Suddenly today I have
a problem in that my inbox is trying to download message 1 of 4, and the
computer starts to download it very slowly, making a lot of noise, then cuts
out when about 2 percent of message 1 of 4 has been downloaded. When it cuts
out the error message says "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the
connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network
problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.virgin.net', Server:
'pop.virgin.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F". At first I thought maybe some giant spam email was causing the
problem so I changed my message rules so that emails over 2000 kb do not
download, and I restarted my computer. That did not help. Then I switched off
AVG email scanner, and I restarted my computer. This has not helped either.
Then I tried disconnecting from the internet and reconnecting, and I
restarted my computer. This has not helped either. I would be grateful for
any advice from anyone.

Sounds like the mail server has a corrupted message.
Connect to your mail provider using webmail access with your browser.
Delete the oldest message on the server. Then try Windows Mail again.

Thank you, Gary! That seems to have worked!

hi, sorry its me again. My query is not specific to this thread by specific
to some advice I followed. I downloaded avast to find that internet explorer
and flash player slowed considerably to the extent that connections from
chatrooms et al were terminated. Is this a problem with avast or a
incompatability with Vista? Do I need to adjust any avast settings that you
are aware of or should I look for an alternative antivirus (the threads on
the avast site are far to complicated for a layman like me..). Everything
else (including email) seems ok

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

I don't know why Avast seems to be causing a slowdown.
Try uninstalling it. Does that improve the situation? If yes,
try the free AVG antivirus:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

With either AVG or Avast, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so
it won't be installed.
