'not read' reciept

I am using Outlook 2003.
I recently recieved a "Not Read" reciept back for an email I sent.

I requested a read reciept and delivery reciept for this email from all
addressees. I have recieved read reciepts from some and not others, I do know
that all addressees have recieved the email including the "not read'
recipient.
Am I correct to presume that this means that the (Not Read) recipient
deleted the email and did not open it?
This is the first time this has happened.

Yes, a "Not Read" means:
- the user deleted the item without reading it
- allowed the receipt to be returned

Not necessarily true. You can preview a message and read it without opening
it. If they preview the message it does not open it and send the receipt but
they can read it. After they preview it (which allows them to read it also)
and they delete it you will get the message that is was deleted without being
read.

That also depends on how you have your Preview/Reading Pane set. Many times
the pane marks items as read.
