Please can someone advise... (It's Hopeless)

I'm using Windows XP Professional on a Dell Inspiron 5100
My problem is that when I do a file search, not ALL the
files (with the correct text) are displayed to me.

My actions:
From Windows Explorer, do a Search on 'Files and Folders'
- Leave filename space blank (so all files search)
- Word or Phrase: Here I entered some text
- Look in: Local Disk (C:)
No modified settings.
No Size settings.
Advanced options:
Active: Search system folders
Active: Search hidden files and folders
Active: Search subfolders
Inactive: Case sensitive
Inactive: Search tape backup

Now when I start the Search...
It comes with the message 'No files found'.
BUT I'm sure the files are present.
The files which contains the text have the
extention .htmpl
(example filename:) login.htmpl

Please what is wrong with my pc???
My college is using Win2000 and there the file is found.

Thanks,
Vincent

It could be the file is not there, Vincent. How long did Windows search.
Usually for text it's a long job. However, have you tried searching for
*.htmpl in "All or part of the file name.."

Good luck,

Ed

Hi

WinXP's search function filters out files to search in based on file
extensions (see further below).

Install the free Agent Ransack, it searches for text strings in *all*
types of files, and not just in a selection of "approved" file extensions
as the built-in search does. It's a *much* better search tool as well...

http://www.agentransack.com/default.aspx

Agent Ransack can save the search result to a file (or clipboard), as text,
comma separated text or tab separated text. E.g. Excel reads comma separated
text (csv) very well.

When searching for text inside files, Agent Ransack is also able to do a
preview of the lines the text was found in (just do a single click on the
found file).
Also, you can use regular expression on both the file name part and the find
text in files part.

If you still want to use the not so good search tool that comes with WinXP to
search for text in files, take a look at this:

Using the "A Word or Phrase in the File" Search Criterion May Not Work

Thanks for your response Ed.
But I'm sure the file is there.
Windows did a long search, but didn't find it.
I tried using a filename also, no result.
When I rename the file from .htmpl to .txt windows find it
AND btw. UltraEdit32 DOES find the file (.htmpl)!
There is something wrong with XP's search.
See other respons from Torgeir Bakken.

Hi Torgeir Bakken, thanks for this response.
Yeah you are right.
Windows tells to search All files and folders, but
doens't do it. It searching in some kind of list.
When a rename the .htmpl file to .txt, then windows does
find the file.
I will try your response for sure, but am now in a little
bit of a hurry. (must do it later)

But Thanks again,
Vincent
