Not delivering Received Messages

I have been using my Outlook 2003 for about 2 years on this computer. I
opened my Outlook file this afternoon and saw that it was downloading 70
messages. This is a normal download for me.

In my task bar it was showing me that the emails were coming into my
computer through an evelope being displayed and going as each email arrived.

But when I went to my Outlook program to start reading these emails, they
were no where to be found. Sometimes I will have some email go to my spam
folder, but that was empty. It appears all 70 emails have disappeared.

I have rules for sorting the arrival of messages, however I have not made
any changes to these rules for months. Not to mention that even still, there
were no new messages in any of my folders.

What could be the problem? and how do I fix it?

If you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook is could be that it
has captured your email. See if it keeps a queue for that. Otherwise disable
the integration of your virus scanner with Outlook and download the messages
again.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your reply. I disabled my AV and still the same problem.

I wish I could have downloaded the messages again but they are no longer in
my ISP mail box so obviously Outlook is actually downloading them and then
deleting them from the ISP mailbox.

Do you have any more ideas? I just lost another 18 emails doing this test.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

We're talking about POP3 accounts here? Configure your account to leave a
copy on the server for X days. This will prevent you from losing emails in
case send/receive goes wrong. Depending on the size and the amount of emails
you receive you can choose how many days X should be. On average you should
be fine with 30 days with a 100MB mailbox.

Back to the issue; does you unread items for the Inbox folder indicate that
the new items have been received? If so, then it is quite likely that you
have a filter applied to your view which hides the new items. Try changing
or resetting the view in that case.

Hi Robert,

Thanks again. I have changed the settings with regard to how long to leave
on the server. This will be a help.

Regarding the filter etc... I have never made any adjustments to the
settings, however I don't believe that this is the problem as in some of my
folders I have some messages that are unread from previous downloads on other
days and I can clearly see both the read and unread messages.

Any other ideas?

Cheers

So at none of the folders you see the unread items change while new items
come in?
Do you have any other mail scanning software installed?
Do things work correctly when you start Outlook in Safe Mode?
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe

For testing purposes you can also try it with a new mail profile.

I think I have found the problem.

While I had outlook open I tried to send an email and it told me the PST
file was full and to run the clean up and delete some data or archive it.

Normally when it is full it would tell me when I open Outlook, but it didn't
give me any errors these times.

When I then cleaned up my file and made some more space, everything is back
to normal and it put my messages into the Inbox as it did before. However
there is no sign of all those other messages that it had previously
downloaded.

I recall having this problem before when I continued to open Outlook when it
was giving me the 'full file' error message and any email that was downloaded
disappeared into thin air. I just didn't think that this was the same error
this time becaue it didn't give me the warning/error until I after I tried to
send a message.

Can you tell me why this happens that I have experienced this inconvenience?

Regards

Tony

If it is an old ANSI formatted pst-file, it is restricted to 2GB. Create a
new pst-file and set it as your default delivery location. Newly created
pst-files in Outlook 2003 and 2007 are by default UNICODE format which don't
have the 2GB restriction. If you which all your items to be in one place you
can move your items from your old pst-file to the new one.
