not connecting to the internet

I have downloaded wireless internet on my computer. It
still will not connect to the internet. I called the
manufacters' customer support line; and after doing
several things, they said one of my sockets isn't working
properly. They said to go to microsoft.com and type
in "win soc fix" and then "win xp". I have done that and
a ton of dowloads pop up. I don't know which one I am
suppose to download. I also don't see anything about a
socket. I am about to throw my laptop out of the window.
Please help me if you can!!!!!!!
