Not able to access my external drives

I am using Windows XP and use external hard drives to back up my information.
It was working fine until recently when my PC stopped recognizing that
there was a drive attached at all. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have
connected and reconnected the external drives and also tried different USB
ports.

Do the drives work on another computer? Do any other USB devices work in
your computer's USB ports?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?
