I just ran the file verification tool in XP,sp2. Some 3000 files checked out
okay, but one file, DANIM.DLL came up without a file verfication signiture.
When i clicked on its' properties it says the progam name is Microsoft
Corporation. I was wondering do microsoft issue files that are without
verification? And should i/can i delete it from my comp.?

Thanks much.

Start > Run: sigverif.exe

When running, you'll notice that many Microsoft system files do not
have a digital signature.
And should i/can i delete it from my comp.?

If you delete all system files w/o digital signature, your system
won't start anymore.

Why would you want to delete it? Are there any problems occurring due to
this file? Normally it's in the \windows\system32 folder.

Hi Wesley,

When i ran sigverif, i clicked on the first "advanced" tab, and there it
says "Notify me if any system files are not signed".Ran it and it found one:
c:\windows\system32\DANIM.DLL ver 6.3.1.148, created 29 August
2002,modified 20 October 2005.
I tried to install the link you gave, but it didn't work-I'am on IE7.
I searched the updates I have and the two you mention are not there.
Comparing the data you wrote, mine is not the same :
c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB918899-IE6SP1-20060725.123917$
(I did update my ATI card drivers recently, perhaps direct X came from there?)
it all seems a bit strange to me...

Well, this does not necessarily depend on the file version level. When
I compare the English file version 6.03.01.0148 (1.054.208 Bytes) with
the German file version 6.03.01.0148 (1.056.256 Bytes), the latter file
does *not* have a digital signature in contrast to the English version.
The same is true regarding many other system files.

d.d, thanks for the input;though i would like to know why, out of some 3000
system files, it was the only system file not to be signed?...if only to
satisfy my curiosity..:-)

No idea what language of WinXP you're running. As for a German system,
see the screenshot. When running an US-English system and all available
updates have been installed, the list of unsigned files is pretty short.
When having the latest English file version of "DANIM.DLL", that file
should not appear in that list. Therefore, you may want to check the
file properties in terms of its version level and the language resource.

You have 2431 unsigned files?! I guess i should be grateful!
BTW, the file is Eng(US) some version as yours.
