I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this . . . Does anyone know
if Norton (and/or Symantec) has any sort of newsgroup where knowledgeable
people will answer questions? All I have found is their Knowledge Base. My
question has to do with the Norton Anti-Virus window popping up and saying
there was a virus it couldn't repair. I then did a complete scan and it
didn't find anything. Do I have anything to worry about? Anything else I
should do?

Joy, try posting to symantec.support.

I'm not familiar with the stand-alone version of NAV, but if it has a
Log Viewer like Norton Internet Security, there should be an Application
Activities log for review.

If Norton cannot repair unless you have changed the default settings it will
have quarantined the item. I set my preferences to "if can't repair, delete"
to save bother. if you get a can't delete first try running NAV in safemode
and if it still does not do it you have a some sort of spyware which NAV
cannot deal with. I recommend the combination of NAV plus Adaware from
Lavasoft.
To get help from Symantec is slow but sure. I have never found a forum. In
the NAV Help menu scroll down to support, login to the Symantec site, select
product & enter ID, look at the data base and use the robot diagnostics if
you do not find what you want go to contact by email and submit a question.
You will get an answer in between three and five business days.

Thanks, John,

I don't THINK I've changed default settings, but upon looking (just now) I
can't even see where to change them. I have the whole Norton System Works.
Where would the settings be for the preferences?

Joy,
try this group, although it says win95, it has stuff about most
Norton products:-
symantec.support.win95.nortonantivirus.general

Neville (and Brent, too), thanks for suggesting the other newsgroups.
Problem is, I'm not sure how to access groups other than the microsoft ones.

Hi CReWdog,

Hmmmm, on the subject of McAfee: Used to be, that was THE anti-virus. Then
people started telling me that Norton was better; so that's what I've had
for several years (renewing it annually). Then when I got this new XP
computer in May, I got a virus and a Microsoft virus specialty technician
helped me to get rid of it and told me to also download stinger.exe, which
is a freebie by McAfee. He said it did a better job than Norton! OK, so I
downloaded it. And I've run it several times since then. What I'm
wondering is (since it is updated online often) if there is any way I can
update the version I've downloaded, or should I just delete it from my
desktop and download again the latest version? Thanks.

Download a new version of Stinger, it is updated often. It
is a tool for only about 45 viruses and their variations.
It is not a comprehensive virus scan.

Hi

Symantec had newsgroup support before, but it was discontinued in 2002
or something like that. Here is all the groups that Google have archived.

http://groups.google.com/groups?group=symantec.support

The only two that still is currently being archived at Google is
the following two:

http://groups.google.com/groups?group=symantec.support.winnt.nortonantivirus.general

http://groups.google.com/groups?group=symantec.support.win95.nortonantivirus.general

There is still some traffic in those two newsgroups, I would think
they are available on many non-Symantec newsservers around the world,
as well as you can use Google to post to them as well (what I suggest
you use to post there as well).
