Norton WinDoctor

I know that this is not specifically a Windows XP issue. However, I was
hoping anyone would offer their opinion about a situation I am confronted
with. So thanks in advance if you answer.

When I run Norton WinDoctor it reports that there are like 146 ActiveX/COM
errors. I'm afraid to let Norton repair them for fear it will seriously
damage my system. So, the question is... Should I allow Norton to repair
these issues?

Any info welcome,

Mike

Frankly, I wouldn't run *any* Norton product on any of my systems. While
WinDoctor was quite useful for Win9x/ME, I don't think it should be
used in WinXP.

Thanks for your support. I to was hesitant to use Norton products. However I
really was looking for a full featured system utilities suite. I couldn't
find any system utility packages that didn't have security features built in.
I found Norton SystemWorks Basic editon that didn't include any secuity
features.

I also installed Norton PartitionMagic. Seems to be pretty stable and easy
to use.

I'm still weary about having Norton products on my system but I really found
that there weren't to many products that offer similar options. I will just
have to use my better judgement when choosing whether to allow Norton to fix
stuff.

Let it repair IF AND ONLY IF you have a full backup to recover from any
problems it will cause. I also won't use anything Norton since I used a
Norton clean up utility and it decided my D: drive needed to be wiped of MP3
and JPG files.

I find that Partition Magic is fine. IMO, there is no need for
third-party system utilities with XP as there was with the older MS
operating systems. Here's some information on maintaining XP:

Michael,

I know it's not generally accepted around here, but I use Norton products
all the time. Windoctor isn't the greatest thing in the world but it does do
a pretty good job as long as you choose the solution yourself. I would never
use the one button checkup feature as it does not allow you to choose your
own solution. Having said that, I have to admit that my wife lets one button
checkup do it's thing and the worst problem I've seen on her system are some
shortcuts that get pointed to unrelated files.

We've been using Norton for years and have been pretty satisfied with the
results. I'd be totally lost w/o Ghost 2K3. Symantech also surprised me
recently when we wiped and re-installed on our desktop system. I loaded the
old version of NIS, whose subscription had long since expired and LiveUpdate
updated the programs and the virus defs even though we weren't really
entitled to them ( I hadn't installed the newly pruchased Systemworks yet), I
thought that was pretty cool. BTW, Symantech hasn't really made any money
off us either: after the initial purchase we just wait for a good sale-rebate
combo and leap frog NIS with SW each year. That keeps our virus software up
to date every year without actually having to pay more than the sales tax on
the software.

Have fun,
LDB

Thanks Monsterdog for you kind reply. I agree with what you stated. One must
be careful when presented with any option to modify your system files. That
is true regardless of the manufacturer of the software that gives you the
option.

Thanks again,

Mike

I am using Norton sstems Works 2006 and I use WinDoctor regularly. I
have neverhad any problems when Nortons fixes the probles for me. I
would rather trust Nortons than to download anything from the web given
away FREE.

the only free software I use is Netscape, Winzip, and old FTP light from
IPSWITCH.

All other free stuff goes to my spare PC which is used only for testing,
hacking and messing around with registry keys and changing trial
software to full license free software!!!

Hey Larry,

Are you making me an MVP - Most Valuable Pirate? how did you arrive at
the conclusion that I am an idiot? Does it not take one be one to know
another?

Had a bad Easter yeh? Has your partner dropped you or is there any
other reasons?

I run WinDoctor all the time and let it make the repairs. I've never had a
problem with t.

I would never do repairs automatically. Spend the time to manually delete those
errors one at a time. Win Doctor likes to use the first thing it finds as a
default automatic fix, and many times that is a mistake. Maybe the 63rd choice
would be best choice concerning one repair item, "delete this shortcut". Active
X items, I always delete.
