Someone was telling me not to use Norton WinDoctor in XP, that it's
worse than useless because XP does these tasks automatically and it
can actually screw things up?

Is that true?

You'll get different opinions from different people, and often very strong
opinions, but many of us here feel that using *anything* Norton is a bad
mistake. There was a time when Symantec made good software, but that time is
long gone.

I use it once in while, I don't let it do an 'Automatic' repair but choose
to examine each reported problem and decide for myself what action to take
if any.

Well I'm presently ticked off at Symantec anyway. I had
Systemworks 2005 installed on our old computer, a 500 MHz
Pentium. Then we just got a 3 GHz machine and I uninstalled it
from the old one while online, hoping that it would tell Symantec
that it was off the old machine. Then I installed it on the new
one, but it won't register it on there, it keeps telling me it's
installed on too many machines! I contacted Symantec about it and
was told too bad, because I bought it on Ebay they won't help!
They said that Ebay dealers can be selling pirated software! But
I bought it legitimately and have the envelope and code to prove
it, and the disk is theirs! I'm SO PISSED at them!

So it seems to amount to the fact that if you buy it on Ebay (
who doesn't?! ), they won't support it, and if you get a new
computer, they won't allow it to be transferred! They SUCK.

But I liked all the things Systemworks did for me.

I used Speedisk, but have found something that claims to replace
that now.

I replaced their NAV with Avast! for free, so screw Symantec on
virus software that has to be bought each year!

Now all I have to replace is Ghost, which is good stuff, and
Windoctor, which I relied on for cleanup for years. So what's
good out there for replacing those two?

I use Crap Cleaner for cleaning up PC mess. Its a free utility.

STOP!
Put down your mouse.
Step away form your Computer.....
Think it over carefully.
Don't use WinDoctor unless you know how to do it yourself.
If you know how then do it without WinDoctor!

I've been using it for years without knowing how to do it myself.

It's only $49.99 and worth every penny of it.
True Image 9.0 Home is all you need...
Free Trial... Try it out..
You will see how lame Ghost is.

Any tools that changes registry entries (like WinDoctor) can potentially
cause minor to major problems. I always do a backup before using these types
of tools.

I didn't dislike it that much, we just got a great big screw job
from Symantec.

We had Systemworks 2005 installed on an old 500 MHz Pentium and
just bought a newer computer, a 3 Ghz P4. I uninstalled
Systemworks from the old one, while online, figuring that it
would inform Symantec that it was uninstalled. Then I installed
it on the new box.

Well it won't register now, it says we have it installed on too
many computers!

And when I contacted them about it, they said that they don't
support it and won't even help me with the REAL problem because I
bought it on ebay, and software on ebay could be pirated! I have
the fricking disk with their label on it, and the envelope with
reg code! The jerks! So I'm seriously PISSED OFF at Symantec now!

Do you haver to register it? Try using the exact same details you used on
the original pc - if you can remember them.

No, it goes to their site on the net and shuts itself down after
15 days if it's not validated there.

IMO they've proven to me that they won't support their
legitimately-bought and owned products unless you buy them at a
retail store! I think they suck!

If i'm quite honest, Symantec's Norton range come 2006 is their best product
line by far since i last used a Symantec product in 2004. I have been a
Symantec customer for 3 years in total and have never experienced any issues
with their software, or indeed their service. There are many system
administrators who have varying opinions on their software, but there can be
no doubt whatsoever that the software is very stable.

I have used many anti-virus applications over the past year, from Eset,
ALWIL, Grisoft, and other vendors, to find a feel for the market, but i
regard Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and Eset NOD32 Anti-Virus System the
two single best applications available readily on the market and having had
experience of Symantec's Corporate software, they certainly are still one of
the most trusted anti-malware vendors available.

It's unfortunate that users experience issues with software, any software
from any vendor, but you have to realise that programming itself is a young
technology, and that no coding is ever perfect. Norton, to all intensive
purposes, works. It's used by the U.S. Goverment, Universities and myself,
and i cannot fault it.
