Norton Utilities Causes System to Crash

I just did a clean rebuild of my Win2k system and am having a problem with
my Norton Utilities software. When I try and do a virus scan or a defrag,
my system restarts itself before finishing the task. The NU is 2004 and it
and all the other software is current and legit, and I had no problems with
any of the rebuild installs. I should note that the restart during virus
scan problem was happening before the rebuild, so now I realize that I'm
probably dealing with some sort of problem with NU, not hardware or the OS.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Google didn't show me anything
helpful. Unfortunately, there is almost no usable support from Symantec
that I've been able to find. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds typical for the symantec products I have used in the past. I can't
remember installing a Symantec product that didn't cause some sort of OS
disruption or blue screen stop. Since their tech support is now next to
worthless you're probably left with trying their registry removal tool or
starting a new install and hope it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the comments, but I have to say that your answer is a bit of a
surprise to me. I've used Symantec products for years, primarily with Win98
and W2k and haven't had any significant problems (until now). What's got me
puzzled is that my setup is identical to what I had before (same OS and NU
disks) and suddenly there's a problem.

Since my original post, I have determined that the problem lies in the C:
drive, and may be related to a bad spot on the drive. What other software
is solid for drive integrity testing?

The best bet is the drive manufacturer's web site for a diagnostic tool.
