Norton Speed Disk can't optimize my disk! (sollution)

Hi:) I have been wrestling a couple of days with NSD (NS 2006 version)
to optimize my 60 GB NTFS system partition. It went so slow that even
when I left it working for a night in the morning it was only 50%
through. I tried killing unessential processes but it did not change
anything. Starting a Diagnostic Startup made it finish the job in 3
hours but the fragmentation was the same or larger. I tried searching
the i-net but have not found anything. Than on the last hope, I tried
the old XP Disk Defragmenter. Always ranking the basic Windows products
under Symantec versions I did not expect much... To my surprise, the
optimization lasted for about one hour and produced 100% optimized
result both on DD and NSD analysis. I was so happy that I decided to
write this post to help others experiencing a similar problem.
Greetings!

The more Windows can do to ween us off this Norton crap, the better.

Yes, use XP defragger instead of Norton's for Win XP. It seems more acceptable
nowadays. But it doesn't seem to do a complete job for some reason.

Defrag 98SE or Me with Windows, that's still a long-winded mistake AFAIAC; use
Norton System Works 2003.

But it doesn't seem to do a complete job for some reason.

Well, I used it only once but it gave me 0% fragmentation on both
partitions.

You're better off without those Norton products.

Unfortunately, too many PC users get comfortable with a particular
brand product and never try new/alternate ones. I used Easy CD
for a long time and now use Easy CD, Nero and CD XP Burner Pro.
Same holds true for imaging. Used to use Drive Image 6.0 and now
use a mix of Drive Image and Acronis True Image. About the only
3rd-Party app I stay with exclusively is Raxco's Perfect Disk, but I
do check out new defragmenter apps when they become available.

That reluctance to test out alternates is probably why Symantec
& McAfee still hold the largest market share of home PC security
products. Competition is good and Symantec has "Assimilated"
more than it's share of small/independent software vendors and as
a result ruined established products or lowered the choices available.

Nobody on this board has anything good to say about Norton so whatever you
ask will be met with:

"You need to get rid of your Norton products."

That being said, I have also found Speed Disk to be very, very slow. Before
running it, run Clean-Up. Get rid of all the temp stuff and empty the
recycle bins. You can also set it to use more resources. (VIEW - GLOBAL
OPTIONS) although that doesn't seem to make much difference.
If you are using NTFS, let it scan for errors first (same Window). You
might also run sfc scannow (check under Windows help).

Do not bother talking to Norton either by phone or web chat. They will
tell you to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows; they don't seem
to know anything elses.

My suggestion is to run speeddisk for several nights in a row. Each time, it
seems to get better, work faster and do more.

Symantec Sucks. Their software is more like malware.

Beating your harddrive with a hammer to defragment it would probably
work better.

Symantec (Peter Norton would have a fit) has changed the way their defrag
tool works, it now runs as a background process which makes it a bit slower
on initial use. It now uses the Microsoft approved 'move api' and not their
own which they did in the past. It no longer optimizes files in accordance
with the file legend located at the bottom left. Also if you have a second
AV software suite installed, Windows Defender, Counter Spy, some or all of
these tools and other can slow the process down even more as any attempt to
touch/move the file is a suspicious activity and these tools kick in and
take some CPU resources.

Please use the name Symantec. Norton was founded by Peter Norton (good
stuff) and then was bought out by Symantec.

That's just not true. There are plenty of Symancrapophants here.

Though I would venture to guess that the majority of the regulars that
answer people's problems here are of the opinion that Symantec Sucks,
and with good reason.

Their software is bloated malware, that is often harder to get rid of
than the most of the bad stuff floating around on the net.

If I had to choose between getting a virus, or using a Symancrap product
on my computer, I'd choose the virus.

You mean ween YOU off of it, right? We can still make our own
decisions, can't we?

Yeah, but I suggest going cold turkey when it comes to Symancrap.

I'll have more time to finish a bottle of Cold Duck while waiting for Norton to
defrag on XP. (HIC..!)

I don't recalling asking your for your suggestion.

If you post to a newsgroup, expect someone to reply to your post.

You might try to read and understand the thread rather than just jumping in
and giving opinions that weren't ask for.

I did read and understand. You're problem is that you don't like the
opinion I gave in response to your post.

And that is your problem, not mine. Symancrap produces malware. Deal
with it.
