Run Disk CleanUp in all user profiles before running Disk Defragmenter.
Also to increase the free space on your XP partition select Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore
points can be quite large.

Insufficient free disk space may be a problem. What is the size of the
drive / partition being defragmented and how much free disk space?

In Disk Defragmenter click on Analyse and see if there is a populated
report before you start the defragment process. If yes save to a text
file and then using copy and paste post a copy of the Report here.

Hope this helps.

I thought you wanted help?

In Disk Defragmenter click on Analyse and see if there is a populated

file and then using copy and paste post a copy of the Report here. That
will give information that will tell me more about the nature of the
problem and what to do about.

Norton stops me from being able to do that, total size is 68.5 used space is 55.60 free space is 18% cluster size is 4KB,and yes I do need help but if I was not prevented to do all this I would not need help.

As the Norton "tech" apparently have been fiddling around with the registry
I'd say that calls for a reinstallation of Windows XP (sometimes called a
repair installation), given there is no way of making him undo his disastrous
work. However may such an action imply struggle to recover your system nice -
and smootly to the (well working configuration?) as before the Norton
internet security installation.

Another way to try to recover is to carry out a system restore to a point
before the D-Day (Disastrous Day), "How to Restore Windows XP to a Previous
State":

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/restore.ms
px

Try that one first, given you find a restore point (date) before D-Day.

Another "friendly" mean / tool to try, is going safe mode and see what
happens, "How to start the computer in safe mode":

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...ll/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true

On your Pavillion you also have a "on-line" support tool available, go
Start\Help and Support and Repair a Problem. It may work.

Three Microsoft articles regarding disk clean-up, just in case you haven't
been there:

"Check for Disk Errors in Windows XP":
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/kbtip.mspx

"How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us

"How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848/en-us

And finally some references to the "tough" ones:

"Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/en-us

"How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/en-us

"How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us
