Norton Internet Security is bogging my computer right out

I installed Norton Internet Security on my computer and immediately ran into
problems. My computer ran incredibly slow and froze. I was able to run one
scan and remove a great deal of malicious software, although it made no
difference and my computer was still freezing. I uninstalled the NIS program
and then my computer was running great. Norton's tech support suggested
reinstalling NIS, as soon as I reinstalled NIS all of the same problems
started again. I have uninstalled it again. I have tried all of the
suggestions Norton tech support gave me i.e. disk defrag and clean up, virus
scan and so on. None of the suggestion from them seem to be helping when NIS
is installed on my system.

I had my computer built by a local shop and they seem to have half of my
memory on a different driver. For example I have a 'C: Local Disk' with 58 GB
and another 'E: New Volume' with 53.8 GB. Does this have anything to do with
why my computer runs so slow after installing NIS?

Any suggestions or ideas on how to get NIS working for me would be great.
Thanks
Monique

Sorry, but my ONLY suggestion would be to AVOID any product with the
"Norton" label.

Norton products are notorious for hogging system resources.

I would get rid of Norton. It's notoriously well known as a resource hog.
Your hard drive space, C & E is not memory. It's storage space. Memory
refers to RAM. Too little RAM will have a significant impact on the speed
of your system but your primary problem here is all the resources Norton is
using.
***

They split your hard disk into two partitions which is not the problem.
Norton products have caused some systems to bog down which is what you are
experiencing. If NIS has options to install various components you might try
re-installing without un-needed options or after installing disabling some
of the 'Automatic' features.

If you want to dig deeper to find the specific process in an application
that's taking all
the CPU resources.

Try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process that using most or all the CPU %, once it
highlighted, right click
and from the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left on the
entry.

I returned my Symantec stuff and got a full refund. The free
applications work better, don't ever expire, and have not bogged down
my system. When I called Symantec for support they could not help me
and suggested that I return the product.

If a Norton/Symantec product works on your system then use it if you
want, but they are heavy on resource use. Some people find they don't
work well, as in your case; you can spend time trying to get it to work
or be better off without out it. You should be able to return it for a
refund. As you have seen some people in this newsgroup recommend
against using these products.

There are good free or low cost alternatives. For a firewall the most
popular free one is Zone Alarm. I use Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall.
Light on resources and easy to use. For anti-virus there are a
variety of free ones including Avast from Alwil software which is the
one I use. AVG has a free version that's popular. Also eTrust from
Computer Associates is not too costly. There are some very good more
expensive anti-virus offerings such as Nod32 and Kaspersky, though the
free and low cost programs work so well it's hard to justify putting out
for the cost of these more expensive ones.

For spwyare and other such malware there are a host of good free
programs including Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, HiJackThis,
CWshredder, and SpywareBlaster to name a few. Here are some links for
help with this topic.

With some exception, I find Norton Antispam to be quite effective.

I am running Norton Internet Security and System Works 2006. I had some
problems with 2005, but once I got 2006 installed everything seems to be
working very well. I have noticed only a slight slowdown, but I can still
run Flight Simulator 2004 without problems.

TURN OFF all automatic updates, automatic scans and every other automatic
option for all Norton products. Don't even have it notify you when updates
are available.

Ditto Microsoft and its automatic updates.

We noticed that searching for updates tends to hog resources, especially at
bootup time.

At your convenience, you can download and install updates for both programs.

Cool. If what you have works, stick with it.
