Gerry--
Usually NIS, NSW, or NAV will show *a box with an Error message
corresponding to a Norton KB when it fails to do something like a scan, or
Live Update won't work*. You can then take the number of the error message
and search for Norton KBs that will offer steps that fix the problem--won't
scan; Live Update won't work; Norton won't open. One of the frequent
problems that compound Norton not working is that often you have to find an
uninstall tool + a manual uninstall for NIS 2004 and get rid of a number of
registry keys, including GUIDs and a number of Symantec files in the Common
Files folder on the C Drive. * If you can give me numbers of error messages
that Norton shows when it fails, I can hook you up to those KBs, or all you
have to do is put the number or the phrase in a search on Norton's site.
Often the box has a hyperlink that will take you right there. For example:
This is a comon LU cure that Norton offers--1812 and in their own goofy way
they make you first read an 1806 KB that is a sign post for the 1812 KB
(they like to play "Raiders of the Lost Ark KB" a lot).

Error: "LU1812: An update failed to install. A program that was part of this
update failed when it ran. This update was not applied."

Given the buggy behavior in Norton products, the fact they are way too
bloated, take up too many resources for what they deliver, and take up too
much real estate, I understand Mr. Bandit's opinion. But your problem is
you've invested good money in NIS now, and need to make it work and it's
only 2004 so it's not that old. If you go to XP SP2, understand that there
is a WMI compatibility patch you should get via Live Update. Unfortunately
Norton isn't smart enough just to put it on their site as a download.

I helped a friend with dial-up connection to install NIS 2004. After install
with CD and 5 hrs downloading with Live-update, the program refuses to open
to tweak the options and start a virus-scan. I un-installed and
re-installed, did live-update again and still Norton will not open. Symantec
only has paid phone-support Mondays to Fridays.
Does anybody know how to open the Norton Program?
Thanks,
Gerry
