Norton Internet security 2004 and outlook 2003

Hi

it is not a very serious problem but it is very annoying

When i update norton internet security with the firewall on in norton
internet security it won't let me receive emails or send emails in outlook
2003 and outlook express.

But when i turn off the norton internet security 2004 firewall i seem to be
getting the emails and sending them okay. i couldn't believe it? it is so
weird. It is not a serious problem but it is the oddest problem i have ever
come across with.

I have recently transferred (unstalled from old computer - as said in
licensing terms) all applications from old desktop to laptop and while it
was mostly a success it wasn't without teething problems. both computers
have windows xp pro, 60 gb hard disk and 512 mb ram, and the desktop is a
pentium 4 2 ghz and the laptop is a toshiba satellite mobile pentium 4 2.4
ghz

What have i done wrong? I am sure there must be a conflicting firewall
between norton and microsoft and while i am relieved to have found a
"workaround" i am at a huge loss to understand why it is allowed to exist.

Is service pack 2 of windows xp likely to solve these kinds of problems
provided that symantec comply with the new sp2 security levels?

I'd say it's a very serious problem that you're disabling your firewall at
all - don't do it. You need to configure Norton to permit outbound
connections for POP (port 110) and SMTP (port 25). I don't use Norton so I
don't know how you'd set that up - check in your 'forbidden/blocked' list &
correct it. Do not connect to the internet without a firewall in place - not
even for a minute.

That isn't the issue - although the Internet Connection Firewall in WinXP
SP2 will offer a lot of improvements over the existing ICF....but you aren't
using that, you're using Norton's firewall.
