Norton Ghost?

P

Paul Owen

I want to do a ghost of my hard drive as it stands so if anything happens
(god forbid) i have to restore I can just ghost back (operating system the
lot). I have done this many times in XP. I have tried installing the lastest
vers. that I can find but to no avail, Vista is not compatable! Does anybody
know (a) what i'm doing wrong or (b) is there another piece of software that
does the same job and runs in vista?

Windows Vista has imaging software built in. Go to the Backup and Restore
Centre.

Windows Vista has imaging software built in

But I'd like to back it up to a partition on my HD

So? Try backing up using built-in command line version of Complete PC
Backup, wbadmin.exe. Selecting partition? Saving image on network share?
No problem at all.

If you have Vista Business or Ultimate then it's already in your system.

Will this backup to an external HD like Ghost? Is it easy to do?
I never used a command line version and I am not familiar with this so please excuse me if I don't know what I am
saying.

It will backup to any mounted device. It's really easy: run cmd.exe as
administrator, then wbadmin /?, and study all available switches.

For ex., if you want backup partition C: to your external disk W:, then
run this command:
wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:w: -include:c:

Afterwards check access to that backup launching System Recovery from
your setup DVD, to ensure you really can recovery it should the need
arise.

Thanks,
One more question:
What about the drivers needed for the USB drive?
Norton Ghost has them. Does Vista?
You can't do a backup without them.

Hi Michal,
Thank you very much. I didn't know that. It seems with all these features I am going to buy Ultimate full version but
have to wait for drivers unfortunately. I have an OEM version of MCE from HP and need some drivers but they are not out
yet.
You have access to any USB device because you're doing a backup in
Windows Vista.
When you recover, you run System Recovery from setup DVD which is in
fact a small Live Windows distribution with all drivers included.

Hi again Michal,
Is it possible for Vista to create a backup from within Windows GUI like Ghost?
I am not very good at commands but if this is the only way I guess I can learn.

It will backup to any mounted device. It's really easy: run cmd.exe as
administrator, then wbadmin /?, and study all available switches.
