Norton Ghost 2003

Considering that Ghost 2003 has been replaced twice, I'm not surprised you're having trouble.

Did you know that Ghost 9 and Ghost 10 include a copy of Ghost 2003 at no extra charge? And that these programs are backwards compatible with Ghost 2003?

Steven

I am trying to remain calm. Yes, many of us did know that.
Unfortunately the friend for whom I am acting bought Acronis True
Image v9 which is not up to the job and I am stuck without any help
from Acronis.

A recent posting advises that 2003 iis available as a download (A
DOWNLOAD) but because of my address I can't order it.

So I repeat, has anyone any suggestions about downloading a copy
today.

Colin

It is critically important that I download a copy of this version of
Ghost. I tried ordering a download copy from
http://www.tekdealers.com/?pg=product_details&productID=89 but I have
a UK address and no zip code so it wouldn't allow me to play.

Can anyone suggest something?

BTW Acronis True Image support has been strangely silent since I
needed them.

Thhe crisis is now over.

I was not working on my own computers, but for a businessman with
global interests. It was I who had persuaded him to buy into Acronis
True Image. I regret that now.

Having replaced the broken hard drive and restored an image, boot up
stopped because it met with the NTLDR is missing error. Without any
response from Acronis over two days the businessman phoned from
Manchester UK to California. The distilled essence of the problem was
explained. They said that they had a work around.

They then talked us through an absolutely standard restore of an
image. We had already done that, and many times in the past. We
arrived at the same point with the error message whereupon Acronis
told us they would email to my home the solution. 5 minns they said.
We're still waiting.

I went home and found a solution on the web. There were many but the
one I used was here:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm

There were several potential causes but mine was fitting a new hard
drive.

We got absolutely nothing from our phone call to California. Shame on
Acronis.

I'd like to leave a note for Anna who has posted on this issue. Thanks
for all your typing. It missed the mark a little because I had no
source drive available. I still don't know if you can clone a drive
from an image rather than a source drive.

My view of using images is precisely the same as yours.

I've still not managed to buy Ghost 2003 from Tek because even after
they advised me to fill the zip code box with any acceptable
characters "process.php" wouldn't load. I hope that it will work soon.

Back to the original problem - if I'd had Ghost 2003 I should have
cloned the source drive on the second computer to the first partition
on the new drive. Instead I shall have to use the Acronis "all or
nothing" option.

Lastly, I shall change the switch into a router so that if one
computer goes down I shall have internet access on the other.

What a bitch life is.

"Back to the original problem - if I'd had Ghost 2003 I should have

You could have done that just as easily - more easily - with Ghost 9 or 10. But you had to have 2003.

I wonder if the OP knows that cloning a "Partition" to another
"Partition" does not bring the boot sectors unless that option is
selected.

Cloning a Drive to a Drive always works as it does the entire drive,
also allowing you to resize partitions at the same time.

Ghost has always worked this way, since before Symantec bought it from
Binary Research.

Thanks for your interest. I was reacting to good advice in an earlier
posting of about a week ago that reported Norton Ghost 2003 available
for $4.99 as a download. This proposition was attractive because it
should have been instantly available as a download, and no prohibitive
shipping charges. As a UK resident it wouldn't have been worth paying
the normal price for Ghost on top of the purchase price of True Image.

If only the order form had been working...

Colin

PS do you know anything about converting dynamic drives back to
ordinary?

I know it's too late for diagnosing your problem now, but there is a
very active and very excellent Ghost support forum here:

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=general

Search in the forum or look at the FAQ topic, that also contains
information about ntldr and boot.ini problems and fixes in case you
forgot to restore the master boot record.

You're quite right, I didn't. It worked perfectly without it. Does
this mean that there is some latent fault?

In the old days I remedies many a recalcitrant mbr with a command on
the lines of mbr/????

This reason I drifted away from Ghost was because the lack of support
for XP but mainly because I could find nothing like an NG or Forum.

Colin

No, there isn't any latent fault. Sometimes someone will restore
partition 2 (which is bootable) to partition 1 on a new hard drive and
not realize the mbr and/or boot.ini implications. So fixing the mbr is
often needed.
