Norton Defrag

I used Norton Utilities to defrag my XP. Lost everything.
Is there a reason, and how do I recover the system
registry?

Reason: Multitudes. Depends on a number of things including exactly what you
mean by 'lost everything', but if in fact the entire HD was 'lost', then
things point to a serious hardware hit.

Recovery depends on what you've done and the exact failure. Case in point:
you ask specifically about the system registry. Be aware that the registry
is composed of multiple files. If the problem is related to HD surface
defect involving the target of a defrag move and the file structure table
was altered to point to the new location and the old data location was
overwritten as a result of subsequent defrag operations then you're pretty
up a creek.

However it all depends on exactly what you mean by "lost everything". Be
specific about what you're seeing without interpreting what you think it
means.

Unfortunately not many people know that Norton System works and Disk Doctor are garbage since Symantec sold the devision. The defrag tool in XP and the other tools within XP are the very best for the system as they are designed to optimize XP and XP only. Throw out any Norton Utilities and just use the anti-virus program it's still one of the best. In order to tell you how it is best to fix your system we need more information. How far can you get in the boot process? Can you boot at all? Do you recieve any error screens? Does your BIOS load? Repost and let us know. }:~)

They are far from the "very best." There are several that are
better. Personally I prefer Perfect Disk.
