Norton AV 2006 and XP/SP2 control panel

Hello! Hope someone can provide some insight into what might have gone
sideways with a couple of computers I'm managing.

Have installed NAV2006 3-user license version on a couple of 3
computers which are for all intents and purposes are mostly identical.
On one of them, everything seems to be fine so far (after disabling
their stupid protection center and reactivating the XP security
center). On the other two, everytime I try to access the control panel
through the start menu, I get an 'encountered error, send info to Daddy
Gates' box. I do, the screen refreshes (ie. taskbar and desktop icons
disappear/reappear) and when I try to access the control panel again,
everything is fine. If I wait a minute or two and try it again, I get
the same sequence of events. I'll mention that the control panel was
totally happy up until the Norton installation so that's why I'm
thinking NAV had something to do with it.

Now I'm *definitely* not happy with this version of NortonAV - I just
wanted antivirus - and will have to research into something else for
when these licenses expire. But is there any way I can diagnose this
and fix this issue in the meantime?

I'd better mention that my computer expertise is only slighly higher
than the average 4 year old computer user <g>...so please, keep the
technospeak to a minimum.

If you'd prefer to email me, try ashrak (spam) 13 (all squished
together) at yahoo dot spam com. Format this address accordingly by
removing the bracketed stuff, spaces and the spam. Or I'll check back
here when I can.

Much thanks in advance for any information!!!

As far as the antivirus goes, I highly recommend Avast! antivirus, free
edition (www.avast.com)... I only installed it a couple of weeks ago, but I
love it so far. Haven't used Norton much, but I've not heard much good
about it.

All these people knocking NAV ..... doh !
NAV and NIS are always in the top 3 of best selling utilities
software... that is a FACT !

I have been using NAV since version 2000 (at least) and have had no
problems at all.
At the moment I am running 2 versions of NAV 2005 on 2 computers with
XP Pro on ... no problem at all !
My HP laptop it came with Norton Internet Security 2005 pre-installed
(30 day trail version I think) and when the trial period expired I
upgraded that to NIS 2006 (which has NAV 2006) and that runs fine !
The laptop has XP Home on.

As most people know, when installing programs in exactly the same way
on 2 computers, for some unkniwn reason the don't always end up
exactly the same on both computers !
Why this is I certainly can't explain, but it has happened to me lots
and lots of times !

Just my opinion of course !

Get rid of all the Norton Crap !
Install the suggested antivirus previously posted.
Also - Take Norton back to the store and get a refund.

I'm not knocking Symantec, but, I too used their products without problem
for some 8 years, untill 2005 multi licence version.
Which despite clean installs of NIS, and clean win installs I had constant
problems on two systems. Symantec could not help, other than suggesting
format install etc.
I only had std office apps and hw running on the systems.

Hi Steve, picking up this thread, I'm using Norton System Works 2006,
after 2005, etc. Perhaps U can advise with this problem:

When I open an Excel spreadsheet, I have to wait while it does a
virus scan for my OWN files.
How can I avoid the "requesting virus scan" message?

cheers-Herb.

If you haven't tried NOD32 you don't have any idea how it is supposed to be.
Symantec products take an XP system and turn it into a snail with hiccups.
NOD32 is winning the AV war; as more and more Symantec products are
discontinued and Symantec advises what products to use instead. Like for
Norton Speed Disk, Symantec recommends Perfect Disk as the replacement noting
that Perfect Disk is a superior product in every way.
