Norton AV 2002 Live Update problem

dejawhy

I'm using Norton AV 2002. My subscription runs through the end of
October. Since July 14 running Live Update has not downloaded any new
virus definitions. Live Update informs me that "all of product and
components are up to date" and doesn't download anything. Yet Norton
AV sees that the virus definitions are 2 and a half months old and
constantly tries to download new definitions. The only way to stop
this loop is to tell it not to check again for 14 days when that
dialog comes up.

Obviously the July 14 definitions are *not* up to date, so what's
going on and why can't I download new definitions?

(I'm using Windows XP Home -- no Service Pack 2 yet.)

Thanks.

They've probably discontinued support for NAV2002. The same happened a year
ago for NAV2001. Previous program updates are not available from the ftp
site which means Symantec want to force users by any means to update to the
latest version, eg when if for whatever reason you decide to re-install
Windows or NAV. Their attitude to their customers is reason enough to ditch
Symantec.

However if you feel the need to continue using NAV2002 (despite no more
program updates even when such become essential) you can download the
Intelligent Updater from:

I have Norton 2002 on two computer running XP SP2 on one and
XP SP1 on the other and I have been getting updates. I run liveupdate
myself and do not have it automated and I get my updates just fine.

I use NAV2002 (among others) and have no problem with
LiveUpdate. Virus defs were updated September 17.

There is no reason to assume the OP's subscription has expired. I am
running Windows 98, Norton AV 2002 with a subscription expiring in
May. Last automatic Live Update was 9/17/04. The product is not
supported by Norton but Live Update should work.

Good luck with resolution of your Live Update problem.

Thanks Laura. If Symantec discontinued support for NAV2001 last year - a
little over a year ago, I believe - but aren't doing so for NAV2002 this
year, it'll give me a little more reason to be pissed off with the bastards.
Which is a bonus of sorts.

Actually, Laura, iirc when my NAV2001 support ran out last year, I was still
able to get the defs via Live Update. Just not the Program Updates -
ScriptBlocking for instance. Prog updates would show in the LU dialogue, but
the download repeatedly failed. It was when searching the Symantec site for
a reason, I found support had been discontinued.
