Norton anti virus

Nel

Hi,
I just had Norton installed on my PC. I had the dreaded 'Bagle Virus' and
had a guy come out and get rid of it, but my AVG wouldn't do it, so he took
it of and put Norton on and that took care of it. My question;
He says I'm to run my PC over night one night a week for Norton to scan..I
never did that before with Mcafee or AVG. Is there some reason I have to do
this? If you have to make sure it's on line I'd rather do it in the morning
or night while I'm up..does anyone else do this??
Thank in advance........Nel

Probably not. You can always force a scan even if they're scheduled. I
switched from Norton to Avast. I use mailwasher and don't nomally scan the
pc at all. Get something that does an image backup (I use bootitng), there
are more ways of losing a system than infections and that backup on cd or
dvd is the best protection for any mishap.

Can't I change the time that it scans my PC? Mine is set for 1:00AM....why
can't I set it for like 8:00 at night and leave it on line till 10:00 or so
if that's the problem, but with AVG I never left my PC on, I had it set to
scan at 9:00 in the morning, and I guess it did....
Norton has a rescue files you can put on a disk, so I'll do that...
Thanks for your answering my message.....Nel

This scan... you mean scan for viruses, right? You do *not* need to
be online while your a-v software scans for viruses. Only if you want
to get a definitions database update first. Then, close down your
connection and go to bed. If set to scan at 1:00am (and the computer
is still ON), it will scan.

If the computer is turned off ... well ... then there is no scan.

Hi,

You do not have to do a weekly scan although it is recommendable to do so.

You do not specify which version of Norton AntiVirus you are using but I
assume you use Norton AntiVirus 2005. You can change the time and interval
of the scan by opening Norton AntiVirus, clicking 'Scan for Viruses' in the
menu to the left and then clicking the schedule icon next to 'Scan my
Computer'.

I hope this helps.

Thanks guys,
I did a virus scan tonight and I'm not leaving it on over night. I'll just
run it myself at least once a week, or I guess what you are all saying that
it has to be on line to scan in the night? No wonder I got a virus, I never
did that with AVG and just assumed it did it's thing as to the time I had it
set.
I can reset it for the morning and come in here and turn it on before time,
but I have a friend that has Norton and she says she never leaves her PC on,
and it's set for early morning.
Guess you might say I'm confused as to what to do..
Thanks again...Nel

That would work.

No. It just has to be ON. Booted up, ready to run programs. But not
connected to the internet.

I'd have though the only justification for doing it at night would be if the
scan took a very long time.

Out of curiosity how long did your scan take?

(Obviously the speed will depend on many factors, but I find that scanning
roughly 100000 files takes me around 13 minutes).

The time of the scan can be set by you. It does not have to run "at night"
or any other particular time of day. Maybe set it to run when you are at
lunch..it can even run while your working ..just minimize it and go on about
your work. To change the scan day and time open NAV and select 'scan for
viruses" ( or some such) and then click on the little clockface to edit the
scan date and time and frequency.

Mine is set for twice a week at 8pm....it can be set to any date and time
you like. HTH

It's so strange. Last night when I was ready to turn my PC off, the
scanner came on. It was 8:00, the time I turn it off, so I'll just leave it
on when I get through at 8 and let it go.

It took 33 minutes when I did it myself.

I still had a pop-up when I turned it on today and said my 'definitions
weren't up to date' and I just did it yesterday, they said it was fine. I
don't get it...So I'm suppose to run def. again now??? And it won't run with
ZA on. Guess they aren't compatible... What a bother, hate this NAV, I feel
like just forgetting the money paid out and going back to AVG...
Thanks for answers guys......Nel

Have you told ZA to allow access? Most personal firewalls will give an
alert the first time you run a program that wants to access the
internet. If it is a program you trust, you tell the alert to "Allow"
and probably "Don't ask me again."

Be cognizant of what the program is, of course.

AVG 7 is just out. I prefer Avast! though.

As others have said, you don't have to be online, just have your
computer on.

I'm sure the reason that the gentleman suggested running it at night
is simply because virus scans tend to be resource hogs, and this would
slow down anything you may be trying to do with the PC during the day.
Having it scheduled to run at night would obviously eliminate this
inconvenience.

I did allow Norton to run as ZA ask, and told them not to ask again. I'm
still having trouble with a pop-up every day stating "Definitions out of
date" I run it again and every thing OK. When I open the Norton and
everything is checked Green, (including the definitions),doesn't that mean
everything's Ok? Thanks....Nel
