norton and outlook 2000

My Father in Law runs his BTClick email through Outlook 2000, and has
Norton AV and Firewall. When Outlook isnt open, his AV flags up a
message saying it is scanning outgoing mail, but he doesnt know why. I
cant seem to figure it out either. Any ideas as to what is happening
and if this should be happening or not?

He is on BT openworld with a wireless router on a secure connection.

Thanks

You should not be scanning email, period! In general ALL local email
scanners should be considered incompatible with ALL emails clients at some
level - its entirely in the nature of the beast that the way they must work
will eventually cause problems with email flow, not an "IF", but a "WHEN".
Email scanning belongs on an email server. The resident, local file system
scanner, if kept current, will take care of anything that might slip through
a server based email scanner. Norton and McAfee, in particular, are not
compatible with Vista, should a Vista machine or upgrade be something the
future holds for you.
