Norman anti-virus

David W.E. Roberts

Hi,

just bought a Fujitsu-Siemens PC which comes with Norman Anti-virus (sounds
suspiciously like Norton if you say it quickly).

Anyone got any experience of this product?

I would like to know if this is worthwhile using long term before the 90 day
free period runs out.

TIA

Dave,

yes I run it in our corporate systems, both server and client-side, in
addition to running it on my own server and own PC, I have found this
product to be both stable and more importantly very good at virus
detection.

I have used a variety in the past Symantec (aka Norton) AVG, Dr
Solomons. I have to say that having an AV that has a small footprint in
terms of size and space taken it great.

I would have to say that althought Norman is something of an unknown it
has been far more efficent on our Email server at work than any of the
above systems.

Thats my recommendation.

Hope it helps

Darren

Hi David

I have been using this product for 5 years it is very good at getting on
with its job, and not putting a lot of "extra" TSR programs on your system
that slow things down. They update at least once a week and often more
frequently, especially when there are new virii around.

Not really...well maybe if I'm really really drunk and *trying*
to say it quickly.

Personally, no, but I have been frequenting this group for quite
some time now and can't recall too many people complaining
about it.

Not quite an endorsement, but there it is. ;o)

Much of the difference between AV scanners is in how it interfaces
with the user. Do *you* like it? I get the sense that it is one of the
"adequate" programs, so if you like it - why not throw them a bone
or two.

I have been using it for about 3 months now and have hardly noticed it
running, and have not had any virus issues to contend with. :)
Norman has "sandbox" technology that enhances it's ability to detect viruses
before they have been 'identified'. The sandbox is a virtual PC that all
code is run thru before being allowed into the 'real' machine. When malware
is detected by virtue of its behavior (ie grabs for the address book, or
attempts to open a port) it is quarantined! Pretty cool, eh?

Thanks for all the helpful feedback.

Looks worth continuing with the product (and a possible contender next time
Symantec asks me for money for my other machines).

Hmmm.....just looked at the Norman web page and everything is priced in USD
but $76.09 USD plus VAT translates to somewhere around £45 UKP + VAT.

Given that the local computer shop is selling Norton Anti-Virus 2003 for £23
UKP with a 1 year updates licence then Norman starts to look a bit expensive
:-(

The Norman 2 or 3 year prices look a bit better - 3 years for $139.50 USD is
roughly £27 UKP per year + VAT.
Still not amazingly cheaper compared to Norton/Symantec which has performed
adequately on my other systems.

Any good budget (or free) options around?

TIA

Yep, sounds adequate enough. ;o)

check w/ norman for dealer locations, depending on where you are ...
Norman's US coverage is limited... their dealers generally observe 'street'
pricing about 1/2 of msrp... If you like I can point you to a friend who
sold me my copy...

Thanks to those who suggested looking for dealers.

Have queried the UK arm - now awaiting response.

No sign of it with Dabs, Novatech, or Amazon.

One thing worth adding is that Normans help desk is excellent. If you
e-mail them with a query or problem, and I've only had a couple in 2
years, they get back to you very quickly and you can talk to a real
person with a name on the phone.

This program is being run on 12 machines used by members of my
organisation and is very effective.
