normal.dot corruption problem (i think!)

When starting Word, it shows the startup splash screen, then hangs. I
eventually have to use the process manager to kill the process to get the
computer to do anything.

After doing a little reseach on the internet, I've found that by deleting
the normal.dot file, it will start up normally. However, after I close Word
after that and attempt to restart it, it hangs again, and the normal.dot file
is corrupted again. It seems that the normal.dot file it creates is
corrupted.

Does anyone know how I can check how the normal.dot file is
created/corrupted or how to fix this problem?

Thanks for the reply. I followed the steps listed and found that it didn't
fix my problem. The only template I have is normal.dot and I have no add-ins
in my Word Startup folder. I also deleted the registry key for the toolbars
to no avail.

Did you try all of the steps? Normal.dot is created by Word and I've never
heard of a fresh one being corrupt.

You can have Add-Ins that are not in the Startup folder.

Thank you for your reply. I checked for addins both in the startup folder
and in the COM window, and still can't find anything installed. Perhaps this
could be something other than a normal.dot problem?
