Non-Windows updates broken

My Windows (and Symantec) updates appear to be working ok. But several other
update attempts with non-Windows applications are causing my computer to
variously, crash, hang, or get stuck in loops, while I try (and often fail)
to kill the application/process. The resulting windows errors (and often
there are none displayed as such) seldom have numbers - some are just
described as "unknown". Examples of things I've had this problems with
include Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Spybot's update feature, which leads me to
wonder whether there is a pattern to all this. Any ideas?

Try cleaning out these temp folders by copying into your explorer bar

%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp

I had problems with Adobe and this did the trick.

What I mean is to enter or copy those folders in the address bar. Where on
the right of the address bar the word "GO" is located. And if your system
seems like it is hanging let it run for awhile, you might have a lot of temp
files.

I cleared loads of files out of those places you suggested via Disk Cleanup.
(I presume that copying them into adress bar allows you to override Windows
File Protection and delete them?) Anyway, thanks but... it did not work!

I've been thinking... I bet it's the Firewall. It corrupted itself.

Hi Peter: Sorry to be a bit ignorant now, but what's my OE? Do you mean I
should leave intact all the previous answers? I was only trying to save
space.

Just thought I'd let you know... I now know the cause of my problem.
Norton's so-called protection corrupted any of my files, including part of
its own Firewall. So far I've only reinstalled the firewall, and a lot of my
problems, including the one(s) which were the subject of this posting, have
been solved. (My other problems will be the subject of new postings.)
