In a word document how to I format text so that it can be seen on screen but
does not print? eg. in a header there is information for my own use but I do
not want to print it.

You can format the text as hidden, via the Font dialog box or by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+H, and set it to display but not to print.

The display and printing of hidden text are controlled via Tools | Options,
View and Print tab, respectively (Word 97-2003).

In Word 2007, the corresponding settings are found in Office button | Word
Options, Display category: Check "Hidden text" (under "Always show these
formatting marks on the screen") and clear "Print hidden text" (under
"Printing options").
