non-microsoft newsgroup

If I use microsoft windows mail, how do I get other non-microsoft
newsgroups?

I go to some binary groups and I always used Outlook Express to combine and
decode multipart messages.

Thanks!

You will need to add a news account for a non-Microsoft news server.
Ask your ISP if they provide one. If not, you can sign up for a
membership here, which will then provide you with a free
news server account:

Thanks. Motzarella doesn't do binaries. Any other ideas?

Try Teranews. They do a free (+ small admin fee), fine for download but its
useless for posting.

Found the following server with a Google search.
No guarantees...but maybe it would be worth a try:

textnews.news.cambrium.nl

Use whatever newsserver you used with OE. WinMail works the same. Does
your ISP provide a newsserver?

Yes, I do have a newsserver, but I mainly use Thunderbird and it has many
excellent features, but combine-and-decode is not one of them.

You asked:

"If I use microsoft windows mail, how do I get other non-microsoft
newsgroups?"

Use the same account settings for your other newsserver you used for OE in
WinMail. They are basically the same program when it comes to news
features.

Hi, Steve. No doubt it's me. I can see a category for newsgroups but they
are all Microsoft newsgroups. They aren't alt.binaries.whatever. I have a
newsserver that won't combine-decode and apparently I'm going to have to
find another newsserver. Thanks for your comment.

If your ISP doesn't offer a news server, you'll have to subscribe
to a third party news server that will charge a fee. I doubt you'll
find a news server that has free access to binaries.

Combine/decode is not a function of the new server, it is
a function of the news client (Windows Mail, OE, Agent, etc.).
Just set up your existing news account in Windows Mail.

Yes, Gary, that's exactly what I'm asking. How can I set up a binaries
newsgroup in Windows mail? All I see are the Microsoft groups.

G

Gary VanderMolen

You need to set up another newsgroup account in Windows Mail,
one that uses a non-Microsoft news server.

Ok, got it. Didn't know you could do that. Have been asking for a while.
Finally broke down and looked at help. :)

Thanks, Gary!

I find the opposite. Their so-called free server is OK for posting, but
it's been over a month since I was able to download anything from
the binary newsgroups there - no error messages, but nothing
downloaded even in newsgroups that I know average a few posts
a day. I'm often able to download from their text-only newsgroups,
though.

Their public server is better for downloading, but was never intended
to allow posting. It has problems working well with Windows Mail,
Windows Live Mail, or any other newsreader that drop idle
connections quickly, though - it is slow to recognize that the
connection has been dropped, and allows each user only one active
connection at a time. Use of this one is actually free, though.

Makes me wish that Windows Mail had the capability of downloading
newsgroups posts from one server, but posting any replies through
another server.

I also have an account at Usenet-News, another cheap place to
get binaries if the total volume is small. However, it has been weeks
since their server even let me log in.

My ISP has dropped all alt.binaries.* newsgroups, so that isn't an
option either.

Newsservers don't combine-decode. Some newsreaders, such as Windows
Mail, can, though. However, in Windows Mail, you have to manually
select which messages to combine and decide first, and get them listed in
the right order.

The instructions for adding a newsserver under OE almost always work
under Windows Mail as well; you should be able to use the same one
you used under OE.

Windows Mail can connect to a total of up to 32 servers - email,
newsgroups, and apparantly RSS. However, I've seen no sign that
it can do anything else with RSS servers.

Yes, I misspoke. In the past I used Outlook Express for binary newsgroups
and all went well. I have looked and looked at Windows mail and until now,
was only able to find the Microsoft newsgroups. Help -- it's a wonderful
thing. I finally figured out how to add a new news account. All is well.
Thanks for your comments.
