Noisy Hard drive

Got a new Compaq 1220NX a month ago. Ran very quietly first week, since
then has a constant variable-pitch hum when it's running. Occasionally will
run quiet if I reboot. Definitely not the fan, as the pitch rises when
drive is being accessed, and drops back down when not active. Noise can be
heard across the quiet room, but is tolerable... but is it a sign of an
impending problem? Not any grinding or other mech sound, just the hum.
thanks

Hi,

usually only thing you should hear from the hard drive is its first time
spinning up, sometimes a quiet sound of the heads moving. You shouldn`t
hear anything else. Do you have the powersave feature to turn the hard
drive off after certian time? That might be what is causing the hum, other
than that, you might want to have it checked out.

Lot's of HDs I had got louder after while. Get used to it.
Your best protection is to get software called "Active SMART"
If your mobo supports SMART protocol this software will continually monitor
all your hard drives
and report any problems they may have. You can even set it up to get email
or shut down system.
It will even monitor HD temperature.
All new HD support SMART. It's just up to your mobo if it does.
