Noisy fan on graphics card

Simon

Hi,
I have a pc with a geoforce 4400 graphics card in and the fan is
screwed, the card is only being used in pc I am building to work as a
server so it isn't going to do a lot. I have disconnected the fan, if
the card does go this won't hurt the rest of the system will it ?
thanks

Manufacturers don`t put a fan on a chip for fun, Simon !.
Fit a fan, or risk cooking the graphics card.

You can buy HSF replacements and fan replacements. Start your search by
finding a product that will work with your particular card. You can
search the products on these Australian sites and then do a search on
google specifying returns within the UK:

www.below-0.com
www.pccasegear.com.au

If none of these products suit, check out Sunon's website (they're a fan
manufacturer, and their mag lev fans are nice).

Cheers,

Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

After talking to a couple of people that have done the same I removed
the fan on a GF4 Ti4200 and have no problems. Even running 3D games.
One guy has been running his Ti4200 for 2 years with no fan. They put
fans on Via C3 processors too but you don't need one. I wouldn't run
my X800XL with no fan though but cards like ATI 8500, GF4 Ti4200 can
run with no fan.

Something weird about that. I've got 2 of those cards. One is AGP the
other is PCI. One has a fan, the other doesn't. That's the way they
were in the box. So I don't know if it matters or not. Oh, both are
in use and have been for a long time.

It depends on how big the heatsink is. Some fans are mounted on
heatsinks that are barely more than sheets of aluminum, but if yours
has several fins and all are at least 1/4" long, then the card should
be reliable even without a fan. If you're unsure, get a heatsink with
1/2" fins, such as the kind made for old, slower Socket 7 or Socket 370
processors, from a computer or electronics dealer.. You may have to
remove any card in the adjacent PCI slot to make room for it, and if
the heatsink can't be attached mechanically, use epoxy or silicone RTV
rubber, after cleaning the mating surfaces of all grease (alcohol
works). There is no need for special thermal adhesive, and RTV rubber
is better if you ever have to remove the heatsink.

Thanks, yes the heatsink looks ok from your description. Anyway it ran
for 8 hours yesterday with no complaints :)
