NOD32 first impressions

Alex Makoque

I've always used Kaspersky, since it was known as AVP, got up to about
version 3 (the one with the really cool mobile phone type gui - ie not
the basic mobile phone one, but the first really cool one), then used
PCcillin2oo2 for 8 months, Kaspersky 5 on a trial, and now NOD32.

I've had NOD32 on for about 2 hrs now on a trial, and I really really
like it, which was a shock - I'd never even heard of NOD32 until about
a month ago! Something about all the various setup options that are
available. Did a full scan of my drive though, and it only took 30
mins, whereas Kaspersky 5.0 took about 5 hrs 2 days ago! hmmmmm, maybe
I've not got it set up quite correctly yet!

but yes, first impressions of NOD32 have been very good. I'll use this
for a month, and then try the EZ Amour thingy whatever it is called,
and see how that compares.....

Then it becomes a case of use EZ AMour free for a year, or pay for a
Nod32 license or pay for Kaspersky 5..... NOD32 seems to be in the
lead at the mo....

Did you try making NOD scan all file types *all files*?

I'm pretty sure I did yes, but maybe that was just the realtime
scanner i set up to do that!

Not really in the lead, after decinding to drop Norton 2004 I did quite a
bit of reading.
My final "candidates" were Kaspersky and NOD32 but most, if not all
actually, tests I read would show KAS which a considerably highier detection
rate, so for me, scan speed does take second place over detection and I
bought KAS and I am very happy with it, specially when compared to the
mamoth Norton is. I do think that the 3 hour updates must be vastly a
download of "nothingness" LOL

Yes, you can set the other scans you run yourself or schedule to run to do
an *All Files* scan and *Deep Scanning* too.

Yes, first impressions are very good.
But you have to go deep into settings.
Standard settins are very different from other antiviruses.
As another people written, it doesn't scan all files and do not scan inside
archives (others usually do - and several levels of compression). This
really makes a big difference.
And I would not recomend it for ordinary users. Because when it detects
false positive (and it does), it is not easy to get access to the file.

I've recomended it to a LOT of "ordinary" users and they never get
false positives. I've been using it since WinXP was in the RC1 stage
and never received a false positive. That's one of it's benefits,
less false positives.
I've seen a lot of "bad press" where Nod32 won't detect the "test"
virus that a lot of AV apps use to test their engine. Well, the
reason it won't detect it is because it ISN'T a virus. Nod32 detects
virii, not "false" virii.......... :)
