nocd patch installed, now no cd

Folks,
My boy installed a nocd patch to make it possible to play Apache
Longbow2 (abandonware, to my knowledge). I'm not sure which nocd patch
was installed, since he dumped the original install file.

Now, the driver for my optorite cdrw4002 drive seems corrupt, and I
can't seem to update it, or remove and reinstall it. The drive shows
up on the hardware list, but not when I'm viewing drives under "My
Computer", and the properties for the drive show that XP can't read
the driver. The only driver help I find from the manufacturer is a
firm ware update that asks from me to select the hardware from a drop
down list with nothing in it.

I disconnected the drive and then reconnected it, with rebooting
goodness in between, and I have the same issues. I assume the nocd
patch has corrupted the original driver.

A. Does anyone have a copy of the driver, and a way to install it in
place of the current one? (I think I know the answer to the second
part, but some reassurance would be appreciated)

B. If I install an additional cdrom drive, and use it to reinstall XP
over top of the current install, will this help?

C. What's the appropriate amount of damage to inflict on my boy?

You might try re-installing your motherboard chipsets IDE drivers.

Hmm.. I thought I typed out a longer response.

Anyway, before you do a reinstall I'd suggest reinstalling the IDE drivers
and "removing" your cdrom device from device manager. Its possible the
combination will result in the drive being redected once Windows is
rebooted.

That worked! I removed the second IDE controller, & the CD driv, and
it recognized both. Thanks, and I hope it helps others.

I'm glad to hear it worked. Thanks for the feedback. Happy gaming!
