No Win XP CD with new computer, How do I get one?

Bought my wife a new computer (Compaq Presario) (I'm hanging my head) and the
system does not include a Windows XP CD.

I have read in various publications that Microsoft will send me one if I
request it, does anyone know if this is true or not, and if so, does anyone
know how to contact Microsoft with this particular request?

Thank you so much for any help with this matter!

You can ask Compaq for a full set of CDs, they may want some
cash.

If you check on the Compaq/HP website, or even read the
manuals that came with the computer, you should find
instructions on how to burn a CD from the hidden partition
on the drive.

That is incorrect. Microsoft will redirect you to HP/Compaq. This is
because of how XP is licensed on your system. It is called an OEM (Original
Equipment Manufacturer) license. Under its terms, the manufacturer is
obligated for support and not Microsoft. It is at HP/Compaq's discretion to
provide a CD and they don't have to. Make a request to HP/Compaq and see if
they will provide one. HP/Compaq's obligation is to provide you a copy of
Windows, but that may be a ghost image on a restore CD or in a hidden
partition on the hard drive.

This is why I now buy my PC's from a small reseller. They give a Real
Windows CD (OEM of course) with the OEM package (sans sticker) as well as a
driver CD and manual for the motherboard. I even bought an OEM copy Windows
XP Pro outright to replace the pre-installed XP Home that was on one of my
new computers.

I have an older HP Pavilion with a recovery CD for Windows 98. I don't know
exactly what it does. I don't think they want me to know because it has a
hidden folder called Empty that contains a file named cloaker.exe (!) and a
batch file that appears to put files in to the Recycle Bin and run them from
there! :)
