My dial-up connection is fine, I hear it and it displays
the icon upon connection, but browsers cannot
communicate. the program is there and tries to launch,
but the error I get is "server not available".

Maybe a virus? I accidentally left my computer connected
to a phone line all night long.....unattended. I cannot
get IE or Netscape to communicate with my modem therefore,
I cannot download any updates.

What should I try?

Try LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
and WinSockFix

been having the same IE6 problems as everyone it seems.
Tried uninstalling, reinstalling...nothing. Connecting to
a phone line just fine, but no browsing...just dns server
error.

Dowloaded the lspfix to a disk, but tried to install it to
no avail.

Deleted winsock and winsock32 to do a communications
reinstall from windows setup, but found no communications
folder! Now, my tcp/ip is gone.

In reading many of the newsgroup notes, and trying
different things, computer is running slow now.

Getting ready to do a winsock fix.... any other
suggestions would truly be appreciated. Have to download
fixes onto a disk and take them home to the infected
computer each day. This is becoming a long a drawn out
process.

But thanks so much for your replies.

Frank, I tried the LSP fis, but now when I reboot, I get
an hourglass everytime I try to go to my start button.
The only way to see anything is to reboot and go to safe
mode. How do I undo the lsp fix?
