the defender-icon down right is gone
and I can't get it back [in "tools" dot in "only . . ." next change it back to dot
in "always" and save]
no luck

Try this Eric,

Right click the "start" in the lower left hand area of the your screen.
Choose "Properties"
Choose "Task Bar" tab
Uncheck "Hide inactive icons"
Click OK.

Try a repair--control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender,
change.

By chance are you using CCleaner? If so, uncheck the Windows Defender block
under applications.
