No Task Manager

My Task Manager button is greyed out. I've tried doing a System Restore but
XP says it cannot do one. The only significant thing I've done recently is
to download KB883939. I'm not sure why I did this but it seemed a good thing
to do at the time when I visited Microsoft's site. Apart from not having
Task Manager I find I cannot make my backup software work (Secondcopy),
although I had problems with this before.

I've checked for viruses and malware and appear to be OK.

Can anyone help, please?

And another thing, not all my progs appear in Add/Remove Programs. Why don't
they? For one thing, none of my MS hotfixes appear any more. And there are
one or two others, notably Second Copy which I am desperately trying to
uninstall and reinstall.

Thanks Ramesh.

Can you help on another topic? I have a backup prog called Second Copy.
Normally it installs itself with an icon in the systray from where it can
easily be opened. At the moment it won't put an icon here. If I try to open
it via the Start Menu or using its .exe file it appears in Task manager
(which I can now use again, thanks to you) but is not visibly "open" and
able to be used. I have not so far been able to get info on this from the
prog company. I can't see why it won't now install an icon in the systray
and why it never fully opens to be able to be used. Is this something you'd
have a clue about?
